Beyond the reef, Belize's jungle interior hides Maya cities lost in the forest and, most hauntingly, a cave where you wade and swim through an underworld to find the crystallised skeletons of ancient sacrifice victims.
01Why it's worth it
Inland Belize, especially the lush Cayo district, offers a completely different side of the country: dense jungle, rivers, and a wealth of Maya heritage. The largest ancient site is Caracol, a great Maya city deep in the rainforest, its towering pyramid still among the tallest structures in Belize, gloriously remote and uncrowded. But the region's most extraordinary experience is the cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal, the "ATM cave," widely rated one of the world's great cave adventures: with a guide, you swim into the cave mouth and then wade, climb, and squeeze deep underground through river passages to a vast chamber the ancient Maya used for sacred rituals and sacrifices, where offerings, pottery, and the calcified, crystal-encrusted skeletons of sacrificial victims (including the famous "Crystal Maiden") still lie exactly where they were left over a thousand years ago, a genuinely awe-inspiring and slightly eerie journey into the Maya underworld. Add river tubing, jungle lodges, and wildlife, and the interior richly complements the coast, making Belize a country where you can dive a reef one day and explore a sacrificial cave the next.
02How to experience it
Base in the Cayo district (around San Ignacio) and take the guided ATM cave tour (a highlight, but involving swimming, wading, and some scrambling, so a basic fitness level is needed; no cameras allowed inside to protect the artefacts). Add the jungle ruins of Caracol or Xunantunich, river tubing, and a jungle lodge. It pairs perfectly with the reef and cayes.
