01Why it's worth it
Bolinas is a tiny, weathered town on a lagoon at the edge of Point Reyes, famous mostly for not wanting to be famous: for years locals repeatedly removed the road sign marking the turnoff from Highway 1, until the county gave up replacing it, an act of collective hermitage that became legend. What's actually there is low-key and lovely, a scruffy main street with a saloon and a couple of shops, a mellow beach, tide pools and a bird observatory nearby, and a proudly old-hippie, off-the-grid air that the sign-removal protects. It isn't a place with sights to tick off; its whole appeal is its refusal to be a destination, which is exactly why finding it, and being quietly welcome once you do, is the charm.
02How to experience it
The turnoff from Highway 1 north of Stinson is famously unsigned; watch for the road along Bolinas Lagoon. Once there, keep it low-key, these are people who value their quiet. Walk the main street and the beach, and visit the Point Reyes Bird Observatory at Palomarin nearby. Don't come to gawk; come to slow down.
From the locals
The gatekeeping is affectionate and only half a joke: "Shhhhh! There's no such place as Bolinas. It's a rumor. No, you can't surf there. No, you can't get there from here. No no no."
