01Why it's worth it
Bonito, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul near the edge of the Pantanal, sits over a limestone aquifer that feeds a set of spring-fed rivers of extraordinary clarity. The signature activity is "flutuação", floating downstream in a wetsuit and mask through rivers like the Rio da Prata and Rio Sucuri, watching fish and submerged plants slide past in gin-clear water. Around it are caves and sinkholes (the Gruta do Lago Azul, a cavern with a startling blue underground lake), waterfalls with natural swimming pools, and cerrado wildlife. Brazil's most disciplined ecotourism model runs here: numbers on each river are capped and you book a timed slot with a licensed operator, which is why the water has stayed pristine. It is not cheap and not spontaneous, but it is one of the country's genuine natural surprises, and, as Brazilians themselves note, one many have never heard of.
02How to experience it
Book the flagship float trips (Rio da Prata or Rio Sucuri) in advance through a licensed agency, since daily numbers are limited. Add the Gruta do Lago Azul, a waterfall circuit for the swimming holes, and come in the dry season (May to September) when the rivers are at their clearest. Base in Bonito town and give it three or four days.

Ask Brazilians for the place everyone should see and hardly anyone knows, and one name leads: "Bonito. It always surprises me how many people, be it Brazilians or foreigners, don't know about that city," one wrote, with "plenty of nature and activities to do in it, water or hiking," the water being the whole point.
