The hook
Arguably the oldest continuously inhabited city in Western Europe, founded by Phoenicians around 1100 BC, packed onto a spit of land almost entirely surrounded by Atlantic: salt air down every street and a city beach inside the old walls.
01Why it's worth it
Cádiz is small, sun-bleached, and unpretentious in a way the bigger Andalusian showpieces are not. Three thousand years of occupation left Phoenician, Roman, Moorish, and imperial layers, this was the port that ran the Spanish Americas trade, and Spain's first liberal constitution was written here in 1812, but the pleasure is mostly atmospheric: narrow lanes and watchtowers, a golden-domed cathedral above the sea wall, the Atlantic hammering the ramparts, and La Caleta beach cupped between two castles right in the old town. Its Carnaval is the most famous in mainland Spain and the sharpest, satirical choral groups roasting politicians for a fortnight. Fried fish, sherry from nearby Jerez, and some of Andalusia's best flamenco in the Santa María quarter round it out. It gets hot and busy in August; spring is better.
02How to experience it
Walk the whole peninsula, the cathedral and its bell tower, the Torre Tavira camera obscura for the rooftop view, La Viña quarter for fried fish, then swim at La Caleta at sunset. Come for Carnaval in February if you want the city at full voice, and day-trip to Jerez for sherry and horses or to the Atlantic surf beaches south.
From the locals
Spaniards post about it with simple, unguarded fondness, "favorite spot in Cádiz," one wrote of the seafront, drawing a crowd of agreement, and the Americans with family roots in the bay describe falling for the province hardest of all: "I have fallen in love with the country and people."
