01Why it's worth it
Grant Avenue is the tourist Chinatown, all lanterns and trinket shops. The real one is in the alleys a block over. Ross Alley, once full of brothels and gambling dens, now rings with mah-jong tiles behind curtained windows and holds the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, the last place in Chinatown still folding cookies by hand on hot rotating griddles since 1962. Spofford Alley, quiet now, hid Sun Yat-sen's secret offices while he plotted a Chinese revolution from San Francisco. This is the densest, oldest, most-layered neighborhood in the city, and it pays you back for wandering the narrow lanes instead of the main drag.
02How to experience it
Cut off Grant into Ross, Spofford, and Waverly. Watch the fortune cookies get made and buy a warm bag, listen for the tile games behind the doors, and eat where the menu isn't in English first.
03Skip the cliché
The souvenir stretch of Grant Avenue is the version everyone sees and the least interesting thing here. The alleys one block over are the real neighborhood.
