The highest point in the city of San Diego is a summit hike inside the largest municipal park in California, and half the city seems to climb it.
01Why it's worth it
Mission Trails is enormous, over seven thousand acres of chaparral and canyon right inside the city, the biggest municipally owned park in the state and one of the biggest in the country, with sixty miles of trail. Its high point is Cowles Mountain, and the mile-and-a-half climb to the top is the classic San Diego hike, done by hundreds of people a day for good reason: from the fifteen-hundred-foot summit the whole county opens up, downtown and the ocean one way, the mountains and Mexico the other. It's not a wilderness experience, it's a shared civic ritual, and a genuinely good one. The wider park has quieter trails, a river gorge, and Kumeyaay history if you want to escape the summit crowd.
02How to experience it
It's in the middle of San Diego, about eight hours from the Bay. Free. The Cowles summit trail is popular and exposed, so go early or near sunset and bring water; for solitude, try the Fortuna peaks or the river trails elsewhere in the park. Sunrise and sunset are when locals really come.
