The hook
The peak that looms over Rancho Cucamonga is the hardest and best of the Inland Empire's local summits, a near-vertical drop on its south face and a line of hikers grinding up its back all weekend.
01Why it's worth it
Cucamonga Peak is the eastern end of the San Gabriel Mountains, 8,859 feet, and its south side falls away so steeply toward the valley that the summit feels like the edge of something. It's the second stop on Southern California's Six-Pack of Peaks, a bucket-list circuit local hikers work through over a season, and it earns the place. The standard route from Icehouse Canyon runs close to twelve miles round trip and climbs more than four thousand feet, the final pitch loose and rocky and exposed. What waits at the top is the whole Inland Empire laid out below your boots, the freeway threading north toward Victorville, and on a clear morning a view that reaches the ocean. This is the training climb people use before bigger mountains, and it's loved for exactly that reason.
02How to experience it
The trail starts at the Icehouse Canyon trailhead a mile past Mount Baldy Village, about seven hours from the Bay, reached through the San Gabriels from the LA side. It's strenuous and long, so start early and carry plenty of water. It holds snow and ice into spring, when it turns genuinely dangerous without an axe and traction. An Adventure Pass is required to park, and you cross into the Cucamonga Wilderness near the top. Go in fall for cool air and clean light.
