The hook
The old British hill station of tea and toy trains: a town tumbling down a Himalayan ridge among the world's most famous tea gardens, with a narrow-gauge steam railway puffing up to it and Kangchenjunga filling the skyline on a clear morning.
01Why it's worth it
Darjeeling made its name on two things, tea and altitude, and both still define it. The surrounding estates produce the delicate "champagne of teas," and you can tour a working garden and taste at the source; the town itself is a steep jumble of colonial-era buildings, monasteries, and a bustling bazaar. The UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the "toy train," still hauls its little carriages up the mountainside, loops and all. And on a clear dawn from Tiger Hill, the sunrise lights up Kangchenjunga and, far off, even Everest. It's more developed and more crowded than remote Sikkim next door, and views depend entirely on the weather, but the mix of tea, train, and big-mountain horizon is a classic for good reason. Nearby Kalimpong and Mirik extend the hills more quietly.
02How to experience it
Ride at least part of the toy train, tour a tea estate and taste properly, and get up before dawn for Tiger Hill if the sky is clear. Wander the bazaar and the monasteries, then slip out to quieter Kalimpong or Mirik. Come in autumn or spring for the best chance of mountain views, and pack for cold mornings.

It anchors the classic cool-weather escape in the east: for somewhere "not hot," one traveller pointed straight to "North Bengal (Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Mirik) and Sikkim," the hill circuit Indians themselves retreat to.
