A string of natural hot pools sits in a desert canyon along the Pacific Crest Trail, a hard walk from any road, beloved and genuinely hazardous in equal measure.
01Why it's worth it
Deep Creek runs cold and clear through a canyon on the desert edge of the San Bernardino National Forest, and geothermal water wells up along its bank into a set of rock-lined pools people have soaked in for generations. It's wild, clothing-optional, and reached only on foot, which keeps it feeling remote even on a busy day. It is also not a spa, and the risks are real. The pools carry Naegleria fowleri, the amoeba that causes a rare and almost always fatal brain infection when water is forced up the nose, along with high bacteria counts, so the standing advice is to keep your head above water and never dunk your face. The shortest way in crosses private land for a fee and still runs a couple of miles over exposed, loose ground that turns deadly hot in summer, which is when most of the trouble here happens. Go clear-eyed, or don't go.
02How to experience it
The usual approach is the Bowen Ranch trail, about two miles each way, off dirt roads near Apple Valley, roughly seven hours from the Bay; the ranch charges to park and cross. Longer routes come in along the PCT. Hike it fall through spring and never during a heat wave. Bring far more water than you think you need, watch the creek crossing when the water is high, keep your head dry in the pools, and pack out everything you bring. This is a place that rewards respect and punishes casualness.
