A compact range of sharp peaks and impossibly coloured turquoise lakes within reach of the capital, some of the finest and most accessible mountain trekking in Central Asia.
01Why it's worth it
The Fann Mountains, between Dushanbe and Samarkand, pack a great deal of alpine drama into a small area: jagged peaks over five thousand metres, and a scatter of lakes whose water ranges from deep blue to vivid turquoise, coloured by glacial minerals. The largest, Iskanderkul, named in legend for Alexander the Great, sits below the summits with a guesthouse and a waterfall nearby, an easy overnight from the capital. Beyond it, the Seven Lakes valley and the routes around Alaudin and Kulikalon lakes offer classic multi-day treks through pastures and past herders, staying in tents or simple homestays. Compared with the higher, harsher Pamirs, the Fanns are more accessible and greener, making them the best introduction to Tajikistan's mountains for anyone who wants to walk rather than just drive. They remain wonderfully uncrowded.
02How to experience it
Base out of Dushanbe or a village on the range's edge, and choose your ambition: an overnight to Iskanderkul or the Seven Lakes, or a multi-day trek among the Kulikalon and Alaudin lakes with a guide and homestays. Go in the summer trekking window, and carry gear for cold nights at altitude.
