A famously scenic stretch of South Africa's southern coast, where indigenous forest, cliffs, lagoons, and beaches string together into one of the country's classic self-drive road trips.
01Why it's worth it
The Garden Route runs along the southern Cape coast between mountains and the Indian Ocean, and it earns its name: a green ribbon of ancient forest, wide lagoons, rugged cliffs pounded by surf, and long beaches, easily linked by a scenic road that makes it South Africa's most popular self-drive holiday. Highlights come thick: the lagoon town of Knysna and its heads, the dramatic suspension bridge and coastal trail of Tsitsikamma National Park, the beaches and adventure of Plettenberg Bay, indigenous forest walks, and, in season, southern right whales offshore near Hermanus at the western end. It is gentler and greener than the safari and city sides of the country, more about scenery, forest, and coast than big wildlife, though it strings together plenty to do. Easy, safe by South African standards, and beautiful, it is the natural add-on to Cape Town and the winelands.
02How to experience it
Drive it over several days rather than rushing, basing in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, and build in the Tsitsikamma coastal walk and forest, plus a whale stop at Hermanus in season. Add adventure (a bungee, kayaking a lagoon) if that's your thing. Self-driving is the way to do it.
