A mainline railroad once tunneled straight through the Santa Cruz Mountains — mile-long bores, resort stops, whole towns — and the forest has eaten nearly all of it. The portals are still out there.
01Why it's worth it
From 1880 the South Pacific Coast Railroad ran San Jose to Santa Cruz through the mountains' core: through the mile-plus Wrights and Laurel tunnels, past summit towns — Wrights, Laurel, Glenwood — that existed because of it. The 1906 earthquake wrecked the tunnels, the 1940 storms finished the line, and the towns simply dissolved; today Glenwood is a road name, Wrights is a creek crossing, and the sealed tunnel portals sit in the undergrowth like Mayan ruins with concrete date stamps. 02How to experience it
Do it as a loop off 17: Old Santa Cruz Highway to the Wrights Station site on Morrell Cutoff (the portal is visible from the public road area; it's sealed and the surrounding land is largely private — look, don't trespass), then Summit Rd to Laurel's portal area and down Glenwood Drive, an original stretch of the first highway that replaced the train.
