01Why it's worth it
Henry Cowell's Redwood Grove Loop is the easiest real old-growth experience in the region: a level, under-a-mile walk among 1,500-year-old trees, including one John C. Frémont allegedly camped inside — big-tree awe without Muir Woods' shuttle-bus circus ("a bit of a hidden jewel — pretty secluded despite being off Highway 9"). The river is the summer version of the park: the San Lorenzo drops through sandstone pools, and locals finish grove walks with a dip ("there's a little swimming hole in the river... after a walk around the redwoods my kids always like a dip"). The famous one is the Garden of Eden, an emerald pool below Highway 9 — beautiful, and honestly no secret for decades ("I'm just old enough to remember when it was a sick Santa Cruz local spot"), so treat summer weekends as busy and go midweek. Steam-train bonus: the Roaring Camp railroad runs vintage engines through the park's redwoods from Felton.
02How to experience it
Main entrance off Highway 9 in Felton: do the grove loop, then the river. For the Garden of Eden, park at the Ox Trail turnout on Hwy 9 (fills fast; tickets are real) and take the short steep trail down. No lifeguards, cold water, pack out everything — the spot's condition is the community's sore point. Winter after rain, skip the swim and watch the river run.
