01Why it's worth it
It isn't really a library and definitely isn't a museum. It's a wooden house in a redwood grove that a friend of Henry Miller left as an arts center after Miller died, and it still runs like a bohemian holdout: books spilling onto outdoor shelves, a small stage on the lawn, and a concert calendar that has quietly pulled Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Fleet Foxes, and the Flaming Lips out to the middle of Big Sur. On an ordinary day you just pull off Highway 1, wander in for free, and linger. It's the one stop on this coast that isn't about the view.
02How to experience it
It's tucked in the trees off Highway 1 near Nepenthe and easy to blow past. Check the events page before you go, because catching a show on that lawn is the version worth planning a trip around.

The tell that it's a real venue and not a tourist stop: people post asking who the "singer guitarist at the Henry Miller Memorial Library this past Saturday" was, and trade spare tickets to shows there.
