01Why it's worth it
Hidden Falls is the Sacramento region's favorite everyday wilderness — a 1,200-acre spread of oak savanna and creek canyons between Auburn and Lincoln, with more than 30 miles of trail shared calmly by hikers, runners, riders, and bikes. Coon Creek and its tributaries cut through the middle, and the falls the park is named for drop about thirty feet below two observation decks, best after winter rain. In the corpus it's the purest locals' signal in the foothills: seventeen love mentions against three tourist ones, the kind of place people recommend to each other rather than to visitors. It isn't spectacular, and it doesn't need to be — it's the reliable green place a whole region walks its dogs, swims the creek pools, and gets its miles in.
02How to experience it
The main entrance is on Mears Place off Mt. Vernon Road, about 25 minutes northwest of Auburn. Weekends and holidays require a parking reservation booked online beforehand ($8) — the gate will turn you away without one. The Hidden Falls Access Trail is an easy 3-mile loop to the decks; the Seven Pools Loop adds the prettier creek stretch. Come in the wet half of the year when the falls and pools are actually running.
