The hook
A place where the sea reaches deep inland to meet the desert, an arm of the Gulf lapping at the foot of tall crescent dunes, reachable only by driving across the sand.
01Why it's worth it
Khor Al Adaid, the "Inland Sea," is Qatar's natural showpiece and a genuine rarity: a tidal inlet of the Gulf that penetrates far into the desert near the Saudi border, so that seawater sits directly against a landscape of high, sweeping sand dunes. It can only be reached by four-wheel drive across the dunes, which is half the adventure, roller-coastering over the sand to a shoreline where the pale water meets the ochre desert in a way you rarely see. It is a protected area valued for its ecology, and the classic experience is a sunset trip or an overnight desert camp, watching the dunes glow and the stars come out over the water, or sandboarding and swimming by day. Close enough for a day trip from Doha yet feeling wonderfully remote, it is the antidote to the capital's glass and marble and the best reason to get out into Qatar's desert.
02How to experience it
Go with a 4x4 tour (dune driving is not for the inexperienced) for a sunset trip or, better, an overnight desert camp with dinner under the stars. Sandboard or swim by day. Come in the cooler months, and pick an operator mindful of the protected environment.
