The hook
The country north of Rome that Italians say the rest of the world forgets: painted Etruscan tombs where 2,500-year-old frescoes of dancers and divers survive underground, a papal city with a walled medieval quarter, and Europe's largest volcanic crater lake.
01Why it's worth it
The Etruscans were here before Rome, and La Tuscia is where you actually meet them. At Tarquinia, the Monterozzi necropolis has hundreds of rock-cut tombs, dozens of them frescoed, you descend a stair into a small chamber and the walls are alive with banqueters, musicians, leopards and a famous diver, painted before Rome was a power. Cerveteri's necropolis nearby is a whole city of circular tumulus tombs laid out on streets. Both are UNESCO-listed and rarely crowded. Viterbo, the medieval papal seat, keeps the San Pellegrino quarter of arched stone lanes largely intact, plus free thermal springs on the edge of town where locals soak year-round. Lake Bolsena fills a caldera and is warm and swimmable in summer, with two islands. The soft tufa rock also produced the region's oddities: Bomarzo's monster garden and the dying cliff-town of Civita di Bagnoregio. Hot springs, sheep's cheese and cheap wine complete it, an hour and a half from Rome and largely bypassed.
02How to experience it
Take a car and give it two or three days: Tarquinia's painted tombs (get there when they open, guides unlock them in rotation), Cerveteri's tumuli, Viterbo's medieval quarter and a free thermal pool at dusk, and a swim in Bolsena. Bomarzo and Civita are already close by if you haven't seen them.
From the locals
Italians arguing about which of their regions is most underrated keep dragging Lazio beyond Rome into the light: "da veneto direi che la regione più sottovalutata paradossalmente è il Lazio, che spesso nel resto d'Italia passa come se oltre Roma ci fosse il nulla" — as if beyond Rome there were nothing. Another names the area outright: "la Tuscia (Tarquinia, Tuscania, Viterbo, Lago di Bolsena) è bella e sottovalutata."
