Mountains streaked red, green, and blue rise over a valley where a hot river runs warm enough to bathe in, and for most of the year no road can reach it.
01Why it's worth it
Landmannalaugar sits in the Icelandic highlands, a geothermal pocket of the interior where the rock is rhyolite and sulfur, iron, and ash have painted the slopes in impossible colors: ochre, rust, green, pale blue. Steam leaks from the ground, and a natural pool called the People's Pools mixes hot-spring water with a cold stream to something you can sink into after a day of walking. It is the trailhead of the Laugavegur, Iceland's most famous multi-day trek, and reason enough on its own for the day hikes up the painted peaks and across the old lava. The catch is getting there.
02How to experience it
The only roads in are rough highland F-roads, open just a few months in summer, with river fords that legally require a 4x4; most visitors take a highland bus instead. Come July to September. Bring a swimsuit for the pool and layers for weather that changes by the hour, and leave time to walk. Camp or take a bunk in the mountain hut if you can, and don't try the F-roads in an ordinary car.

Landmannalaugar arrives in the r/travel Iceland thread as the thing someone did not expect to be their highlight: after a South Coast and Ring Road trip, "one of the coolest places we went was Landmannalaugar — it's a long, gorgeous, bumpy drive in through amazing lava fields."
The word doing the work there is bumpy. The F-roads in are unpaved highland tracks with river fords, closed for much of the year and off-limits to two-wheel-drive rentals — which is exactly why the rhyolite hills stay quiet while the Golden Circle does not.
Two standing Iceland cautions from the same thread apply with force up here. On seasons: "outside Reykjavík, many things close or have limited hours outside of the summer season, so check before you try to wing it." And on weather, which in the highlands is not a figure of speech: "you may have hail and then blue skies 5 minutes later, then more hail, then rain later. Waterproof shoes are very important."
