The hook
Two riverside cliffs honeycombed with over 2,000 caves and 100,000 carved Buddhas, presided over by a seventeen-metre Vairocana whose calm face, said to be modelled on an empress, is one of the masterpieces of Chinese sculpture.
01Why it's worth it
Carved over centuries around the old capital of Luoyang, mostly under the Northern Wei and the Tang, Longmen is the most refined of China's great grotto sites, less about sheer age than about the peak of Tang Buddhist art. The showpiece is the Fengxiansi shrine, an open-air cluster of huge figures dominated by the serene Vairocana Buddha, but the pleasure is walking the whole riverside face and spotting the range, from imperial commissions to tiny niches paid for by ordinary families, many sadly beheaded by looters a century ago. Luoyang, one of China's oldest capitals, adds more: the White Horse Temple, traditionally the first Buddhist temple in the country, and the Shaolin Monastery, birthplace of kung fu, an easy trip away. It's a UNESCO site and an easy stop on the fast rail line between Xi'an and points east.
02How to experience it
Walk both banks (the west cliff for the Fengxiansi grottoes, the east for the view back across the river to them), going early before the coach groups. Give it a half day, and add the White Horse Temple or a day trip to Shaolin from Luoyang. Spring and autumn are most comfortable.

Travellers pushing back on the idea that China is all modern cities reel off Luoyang's depth: it "has the Longmen Stone Grottoes, the White Horse Temple (first Buddhist temple in all China), the Shaolin Monastery," one wrote, the kind of ancient layering the skyline-focused itineraries miss.
