01Why it's worth it
Marrakech is Morocco at its most intense and seductive. Its heart is the Jemaa el-Fna, a vast square that by day holds juice carts and snake charmers and by night transforms into a smoke-wreathed open-air feast of grills, halqa storytelling circles, and Gnaoua musicians, an old-world spectacle so distinctive that UNESCO named it a masterpiece of intangible heritage. Around it spreads a maze of souks selling lanterns, leather, and spices, and behind blank walls hide serene riads, the Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef madrasa, and green gardens like the Majorelle. The honest side is the hustle: the medina can be a relentless gauntlet of touts, faux guides, and hard-sell, and it takes some steel to enjoy it. Retreat to a riad's calm courtyard, and with the snow-capped Atlas often visible beyond the ramparts, the city's sensory richness wins. It is a place to feel more than to tick off.
02How to experience it
Wander the souks in the morning, retreat to a riad in the heat, and give the Jemaa el-Fna the evening when it comes alive; eat at the food stalls with care. See the Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef madrasa, and a garden. Be politely firm with touts, and use Marrakech as a base for the Atlas and the desert beyond.

The advice that recurs is about dosage and vigilance, not avoidance. "You only need 3 days in Marrakech," one solo traveller wrote, pairing it with the desert and the coast. Others are blunt about the hustle: one was "threatened by an orange juice seller in Marrakech because we went to one of his rivals."
