01Why it's worth it
McLaren is what Golden Gate Park would feel like with 90% fewer people: 300-plus acres across the city's southeast hills, ringed by neighborhoods tourists never reach. The variety is the surprise — "you get so many different environments: grassy plains, forests, marine" — stitched together by the Philosopher's Way, a marked walking loop with stone "musing stations" designed by artists to slow you down. The blue water tower on the ridge became a low-key pilgrimage point during lockdown walks, and the wooden Jerry Garcia Amphitheater (he grew up nearby in the Excelsior) still runs free summer shows. When AskSF debated real hidden gems, "McLaren Park 1000 percent" was one of the least-contested answers. Be streetwise about the edges: the park borders some of the city's roughest housing, locals advise sticking to daylight, and the occasional dirt-bike pack rips through — it's the city's best argument that depth hides in the unfashionable quadrant, with the quadrant's realities attached.
02How to experience it
Start at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater entrance off Sunnydale, or pick up the Philosopher's Way markers at Mansell & Visitacion and let the loop route you. Climb to the blue tower for the 360: downtown, San Bruno Mountain, the bay. Weekdays it's you, dog walkers, and hawks.
