The emptiest of the East Bay's big parklands, on Mount Diablo's hidden back side — reached by a one-lane mountain road that locals describe with equal parts love and horror.
01Why it's worth it
Morgan Territory Road is the initiation: a single-lane ribbon over the Diablo backcountry with blind corners, wrong-cambered turns, and the occasional herd of cows sheltering around a bend — motorcyclists call it "one of the worst/best roads" in the region, and Google-Maps shortcut victims tell cautionary tales. What it protects is the reward: nearly 5,000 acres of high oak savanna and sandstone ridges where you can walk for hours on a spring weekend and meet almost nobody ("a great hike, and is seldom busy — the drive is a little long, but the views are worth it"). From the ridgetop the view flips the usual Bay Area orientation: instead of bridges and skyline, you look east over the Central Valley toward the Sierra, and in spring the wildflower show on these grasslands is among the East Bay's best. This is Diablo without Diablo's traffic — the same mountain wildness, minus everyone.
02How to experience it
Staging area at the crest of Morgan Territory Road (from Livermore via N. Livermore Ave, or Clayton via Marsh Creek Rd — drive it patiently, pull in for oncoming cars). The Volvon Loop (~4.5 mi, named for the Volvon people whose land this was) is the standard tour; free parking, vault toilets, no water to speak of — carry yours.
