01Why it's worth it
Naxos is what people hope Santorini will be and isn't anymore. It is a real, working island with farms, marble quarries, and cheese, so it can absorb visitors without becoming a stage set. The town's landmark, the Portara, is a huge freestanding marble door from an unfinished temple to Apollo, left standing on a headland for two and a half thousand years and now the frame everyone watches the sun drop through. Inland, whitewashed and stone villages like Halki and Apeiranthos sit under Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades and, in myth, where Zeus grew up; a marked trail climbs it. The beaches on the west coast run for kilometres and stay uncrowded outside August. It asks for a slower few days rather than a photo stop.
02How to experience it
Rent a car or scooter and give it real time. Spend mornings on the west-coast beaches, afternoons in the mountain villages, and evenings at the Portara for the sunset without the Santorini scrum. Climb Mount Zas if you want a half-day walk with an island-wide view.
