01Why it's worth it
Ojai sits in an east-west valley below the Topatopa Bluffs, which is a lucky geometry: at sunset the light hits the mountains head-on and they glow a startling pink for a few minutes, the "Pink Moment" the whole town turns out for. The rest of it is a small arts-and-wellness town, galleries and tea and a long spiritual streak, the sort of place people come to slow down. The one thing not to skip is Bart's Books, running since 1964: the world's largest outdoor bookstore, a hundred and thirty thousand volumes shelved along open-air walls and courtyards, and when it's closed you can still take a book and drop coins in the slot in the door. It began as one man's overflow shelves on the sidewalk and never moved inside.
02How to experience it
Ojai is about five hours from the Bay, up Highway 33 from Ventura. Wander downtown and Bart's Books, then find a west-facing spot, Meditation Mount or the valley overlook or just an open patio, for the Pink Moment right at sunset. It's a half-day town, hot in summer, and it pairs with the coast or the Channel Islands out of Ventura.
