01Why it's worth it
Orheiul Vechi is Moldova's most striking sight and a window into deep rural life. In a dramatic bend of the Răut river, monks cut a monastery into the soft limestone cliff centuries ago, and a cave church is still in use, reached by a path along the ridge with the green gorge falling away below. The site has been sacred far longer, layered with traces of earlier peoples. The nearby village of Butuceni is a preserved traditional Moldovan settlement of white cottages and vine trellises where you can stay and eat home cooking. It is quiet, unpolished, and off almost every itinerary, which is exactly its appeal in Europe's least-visited country. The combination of cliff, river, cave church, and old village makes a peaceful, atmospheric half-day.
02How to experience it
Walk out along the ridge to the cave church and down into the gorge, and stay or eat in Butuceni village for the traditional Moldovan hospitality. Come on a weekday for solitude. It pairs naturally with the wine cellars nearer the capital.
