01Why it's worth it
For all Costa Rica's easy ecotourism, the Osa Peninsula in the remote southwest is where its nature reaches full, raw intensity. At its heart, Corcovado National Park protects one of the last great tracts of Pacific lowland tropical rainforest in Central America, and its biodiversity is staggering, so rich that National Geographic famously dubbed it "the most biologically intense place on Earth." Here, in a way that has become rare, you can still find the full cast of the American rainforest: all four Costa Rican monkey species, tapirs ambling on the beach, endangered jaguars and pumas (elusive), peccaries, anteaters, crocodiles, and dazzling flocks of scarlet macaws, sloths, and countless birds and frogs, along the trails and where the jungle spills onto wild, empty Pacific beaches. Reaching it takes effort, hiking in with guides from ranger stations or staying at remote eco-lodges, and that remoteness is exactly why the wildlife is so abundant and the experience so wild and uncrowded. Offshore, Caño Island adds superb snorkelling and diving. For travellers who want their rainforest genuinely wild and their wildlife genuinely abundant, the Osa is Costa Rica's finest, most adventurous corner.
02How to experience it
Reach the Osa via Puerto Jiménez or Drake Bay, and explore Corcovado on guided day hikes from a ranger station or by staying at a remote eco-lodge; a good guide massively improves wildlife sightings. Add snorkelling or diving at Caño Island. Go in the drier months for easier access, and come prepared for heat, humidity, and genuine remoteness.
