The hook
An 11th-century Khmer temple strung along the very edge of a cliff, 500 metres above the plains, reached by a road so steep and so remote that you may have the whole ridge and its view to yourself.
01Why it's worth it
Preah Vihear predates Angkor Wat and was built not on a flat plain but along a narrow spur of the Dangrek Mountains, a linear sequence of sanctuaries and staircases climbing nearly a kilometre to a final shrine perched at the cliff edge, with a sheer drop and a vast view over northern Cambodia below. That siting, dramatic and singular, is why UNESCO listed it and why it feels utterly different from the temple-in-jungle experience at Siem Reap. It sits directly on the Thai–Cambodian border and has been the flashpoint of a long, sometimes armed, sovereignty dispute, which is exactly why tourism never took hold here and why it remains empty. That same remoteness and the surrounding, thinly visited province are its appeal, but it also means access can close with little notice, so this is a place to check on before you commit the long drive.
02How to experience it
Base in the modern town of Sra Em, then take the steep access road up to the temple (the last climb is done in local vehicles). Walk the whole axis from the base gopura up to the cliff-edge sanctuary, and give yourself time at the top for the view. Check the current border and security status before travelling, and go in the dry season when the road is passable.
From the locals
Ask Cambodians which corner of their country is most overlooked and the answer runs north, away from the Siem Reap and coastal circuit: "Preah Vihear," one wrote, noting that "so much of the natural beauty is confined to the perimeter of Siem Reap, and the coast," while up here the "gorgeous hilly views" and the temple stay empty precisely because "tourism [isn't] likely to expand in the near future."
