A working fishing town on Ecuador's Pacific coast where you can see blue-footed boobies, snorkel a reef and watch humpbacks breed — for a fraction of what the Galápagos costs, which is why Ecuadorians call the island offshore the poor man's Galápagos.
01Why it's worth it
Isla de la Plata sits about 40 km off Puerto López inside Machalillla National Park, and it hosts nesting colonies of the same species the Galápagos is famous for: blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, frigatebirds, and — seasonally — waved albatross. The boobies in particular are not a Galápagos exclusive at all; they range the Pacific coast from California to Peru, and the island is one of the easiest places on the mainland side to walk among them.
A day trip runs a few hours on the boat, a guided walk on the island, and an hour of snorkelling over the reef. It costs a small fraction of a Galápagos cruise, and you sleep on the mainland.
The bigger draw for many is the humpbacks. From roughly June to September, southern-hemisphere humpbacks come north to calve and breed in these warm shallows, and Puerto López is the main departure point — boats do not have to go far.
The town itself is a fishing port with a working beach, not a resort. Los Frailes, a protected crescent of white sand inside the national park, is a short ride north and is regularly called the best beach on Ecuador's mainland coast. Agua Blanca, an inland community with a sulphur lagoon and a small archaeological museum of the Manteño culture, is the other half of the park.
02How to experience it
Bus from Guayaquil or Manta. Book the island tour through a licensed operator in town; they all run the same permitted itinerary, so choose on boat quality. Come in whale season if you can. Give it two or three days so Los Frailes and Agua Blanca fit around the island day.
The honest note
It is not the Galápagos, and the comparison cuts both ways. You get boobies, a reef and a boat ride; you do not get the endemic fauna, the tameness, or the scale. People who arrive expecting a cheap substitute are sometimes disappointed; people who arrive expecting a good day out on a wild island are not.
The crossing can be rough — around an hour and a half each way in open Pacific water, and seasickness is common enough that operators hand out bags.
Out of whale season the town is quiet, which is either the appeal or the problem.
From the locals
The clearest recommendation frames it exactly as the alternative it is: "If you're looking for something more lowkey than the Galapagos you should head to Puerto Lopez, you can get a tour to Isla de la Plata to see the blue-footed boobies and do an hour of snorkeling for way cheaper. And it's literally right next to the G[alápagos]."
Ecuadorians advising a budget traveller put the same thing more bluntly, and supplied the local nickname: "If your in a budget visit Puerto Lopez and Isla de la Plata 'galapagos of the poors', whale watching, diving and surfing are great there."
And the premise is confirmed from the other direction — by someone who had photographed a blue-footed booby in the Galápagos and pointed out you need not go there for it: "you don't need to travel to the Galapagos to see these beauties. They can also be found along the Pacific Coast from California to Peru."
