A basilica begun in 1882 and still unfinished, its interior a forest of branching stone columns under coloured light, the strangest and most ambitious building of Antoni Gaudí's strange, ambitious city.
01Why it's worth it
Gaudí gave Barcelona a whole architecture of its own, curved, organic, wildly inventive, and the Sagrada Família is his unfinished masterpiece. He worked on it for over forty years, is buried in its crypt, and knew he would never see it done; construction has continued past its centenary and only recently neared completion. The famous surprise is inside: columns that split like tree trunks into a canopy, and stained glass that throws warm light on one side of the nave and cool on the other as the sun moves, so the stone seems to glow. Around the city his other buildings, the bone-like Casa Batlló, the wave-fronted Casa Milà, the mosaic terraces of Park Güell, extend the vision. It is one of Europe's most visited sights and heavily ticketed, so plan around the crowds. The interior light is the thing to come for.
02How to experience it
Book a timed ticket well ahead; walk-ups don't work. Aim for early or late slots when the low sun fires the stained glass. Pair the basilica with one Gaudí house and Park Güell for the full range, but don't try to cram all of it into one exhausting day.
From the locals
Catalans have limited patience for visitors who shrug at it: "if you went to Barcelona, a city with 9 World Heritage Sites, and you didn't see anything special, there is not much we can do," one wrote — before describing taking a friend to the Sagrada Família and never forgetting how amazed she was. Travellers who pick a side tend to agree: "Barcelona all the way. Gaudí homes, Sagrada Família, Gothic Quarter, walking the city."
