The hook

The beach Sicilians themselves call the most beautiful they've ever seen: a white crescent under a headland at San Vito Lo Capo, and next door a car-free coastal reserve where a footpath links seven turquoise coves you can only reach by walking or by boat.

01Why it's worth it

Western Sicily keeps its best coast for those who ask locals. San Vito Lo Capo is a low-key, Arab-flavoured beach town — its couscous festival each September tells the island's North African story — fronting Caribbean-clear water against the Monte Monaco headland. The real prize is the neighbouring Riserva dello Zingaro, Sicily's first nature reserve, born when locals marched to stop a coast road in 1980: seven kilometres of protected coastline where a dirt path strings together pebble coves (Cala Capreria, Cala Marinella, Cala dell'Uzzo) with snorkelling-clear water, dwarf palms, and old tuna-fishery buildings, and not a car in sight. Nearby, the honey-stone tonnara of Scopello and its sea stacks close the picture. It's beloved by Italians in summer — book ahead for August or, better, don't come in August.

02How to experience it

Base in San Vito Lo Capo or Scopello and walk the Zingaro path early, swimming cove by cove (bring water and shoes; there's no bar for seven happy kilometres). Add the Scopello faraglioni at dusk, and time a late-September visit to the couscous festival. Shoulder months are the play; Favignana's cales are a ferry-hop away.

From the locals

The source is as native as it gets: "Io sono siciliano… la spiaggia più bella in assoluto che io abbia mai visto qui è la zona di San Vito Lo Capo — è veramente bella sia la spiaggia del paese che ancora di più la riserva dello Zingaro con le sue calette. È bellissima anche Favignana." A Sicilian's own most-beautiful-beach vote, reserve first.
