A city in a steep valley where a single street carries you from Ottoman bazaar to Austro-Hungarian boulevard in a few paces, and where the scars of a modern siege are still legible if you look.
01Why it's worth it
Sarajevo has spent its history at the seam of empires, and it wears all of them. In the old town, the Baščaršija, you drink Bosnian coffee among mosques, a caravanserai, and coppersmiths; walk west a little and the architecture flips to grand Habsburg façades, past the corner where the assassination that lit the First World War took place. That layering of Ottoman east and Central European west in one small city is its signature. It also endured the longest siege of a capital in modern European history in the 1990s, and the memory is present but not performed: shell-scars filled with red resin, the wartime tunnel that kept the city alive, a quiet cemetery on the hills. It is warm, cheap, and resilient, and the coffee culture is a pleasure in itself.
02How to experience it
Walk the old bazaar and the "meeting of cultures" line where east becomes west, and drink coffee the slow Bosnian way. Engage the war history honestly at the Tunnel of Hope and the hillside viewpoints, then let the living, friendly city be the rest of the visit.
