The hook
The best place on earth to meet an orangutan that isn't in a cage: a rehabilitation centre in Sabah where orphaned apes are taught to be wild again, next door to a sun bear sanctuary, and upriver a stretch of the Kinabatangan where the wildlife concentrates because the forest around it has gone.
01Why it's worth it
Sepilok has been rehabilitating orphaned and rescued orangutans since 1964, returning them to the surrounding forest reserve; you watch semi-wild animals come in to feeding platforms, which is honest about what it is, neither a zoo nor a wilderness encounter. Beside it, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre cares for the world's smallest bear, and the Rainforest Discovery Centre's canopy walkway is a genuinely excellent birding site. Two hours on, the Kinabatangan river offers Southeast Asia's most reliable wildlife cruising, proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills, crocodiles, and, with luck, pygmy elephants, from small boats at dawn and dusk.
The honest context matters: that density exists partly because oil palm has replaced most of the surrounding lowland forest, squeezing animals into a narrow riverside corridor. It's spectacular viewing and an ongoing conservation emergency at once, and the plantations are visible from the road in. Going supports the centres that exist because of it.
02How to experience it
Base at Sepilok for two nights, timing the orangutan and sun bear feedings and walking the canopy at first light for birds. Then move upriver to a Kinabatangan lodge for two nights of dawn and dusk boat cruises. Fly into Sandakan; Grab works well from there. Book lodges ahead in peak months.

Malaysians say the island half of their country is the part visitors skip: "I was born in the Borneo part of Malaysia… it seems that part of Malaysia is most ignored when it comes to tourism, but it's probably one of the best nature places to visit," one wrote, pointing to Sabah and Kota Kinabalu as the way in.
