01Why it's worth it
Sintra is where the nineteenth-century Romantic imagination got a landscape to build on. The hilltop is damp, misty, and forested when Lisbon below is baking, and over a couple of centuries that microclimate drew a run of extravagant projects: the Pena Palace, a king's holiday castle painted in circus colours and stitched together from every historical style at once; the ruined Moorish castle walls running along the ridge; and the Quinta da Regaleira, a private estate riddled with tunnels, grottoes, and a spiral "initiation well" that descends underground. It is genuinely strange and genuinely crowded, one of the busiest day-trips in Portugal, with narrow roads that choke by late morning. The trick is timing, not avoidance.
02How to experience it
Come on a weekday, take the first-slot tickets to Pena, and go up the hill early before the coach crowds and the traffic build. Use the shuttle buses or walk the wooded trails between sites rather than driving, because parking is a nightmare. Regaleira's well and tunnels reward slow wandering more than the palace interiors do.

A Portuguese local who lives nearby points past the famous palaces first: "if you're talking about Sintra specifically, I would say Quinta da Regaleira — a beautiful estate with beautiful gardens," and its Poço Iniciático, the spiral initiation well you descend into the ground.
