The hook

A bleak, fog-shrouded shore where the great dunes of the Namib run straight into the cold Atlantic, littered with the rusting hulks of shipwrecks and the bones of whales, with an incongruous little German-colonial resort town in the middle of it.

01Why it's worth it

The Skeleton Coast is one of the most desolate and atmospheric coastlines on earth: the Namib desert meets the frigid Atlantic in a collision of towering dunes, cold surf, and near-constant fog created by the offshore Benguela current, which for centuries wrecked ships whose skeletal remains still rust in the sand, alongside whale bones that gave the coast its grim name. At Cape Cross, one of the largest Cape fur seal colonies in the world crowds the shore (and assaults the nose). In the midst of this bleakness sits Swakopmund, a startlingly tidy town of German-colonial architecture, cafés, and Bavarian bakeries, now an adventure hub for dune boarding, quad biking, and scenic flights over the coast. Further south near Lüderitz, the ghost town of Kolmanskop, a diamond-rush settlement being reclaimed by the desert, its rooms half-filled with sand, is a hauntingly photogenic detour. Together, this coast offers stark beauty, strange history, and a quirky base.

02How to experience it

Base in Swakopmund for the colonial town, bakeries, and desert adventures, and drive up the coast to the shipwrecks and the Cape Cross seal colony. For the full eeriness, take a scenic flight over the dunes-meet-ocean coast, or detour south to the sand-filled ghost town of Kolmanskop. Dress for cool, foggy weather.
