01Why it's worth it
Tallinn's old town is the genuine article: an almost complete medieval walled city of cobbled lanes, Gothic guild halls, a Hanseatic town hall, and long stretches of wall and towers, split between the merchants' lower town and the fortified upper hill of Toompea with its rulers' castles and the onion domes of a Russian cathedral. It is small and very well kept, which is also its problem, because ferries from Helsinki and cruise ships can pack the core in summer. Step outside the walls, though, and Estonia's other character shows: this is one of the most digitally advanced societies on earth, and the Telliskivi creative quarter in an old railway complex is full of design studios, street art, and start-ups. Old and hyper-modern sit oddly and enjoyably close.
02How to experience it
Do the old town early or off-season to beat the cruise crowds, walking the walls and up to the Toompea viewpoints. Then cross to the Telliskivi quarter for the contemporary, design-forward Estonia. It is an easy day-trip by fast ferry from Helsinki.
