The hook
A canyon cut through solid marble, so narrow in places that the walls nearly close overhead, with a road and footpaths carved into the rock face by hand — on the side of Taiwan where the Central Range drops straight into the Pacific.
01Why it's worth it
Taroko is the reason people cross to the east coast. The Liwu river has cut a gorge through a marble massif, and the result is pale grey-and-white walls streaked with veins, turquoise water below, and tunnels and galleries hacked into the cliffs by veterans building the cross-island highway in the 1950s at considerable cost in lives. The Shakadang and Baiyang trails run beside the water; the Swallow Grotto is the narrow section where the walls loom; and a temple sits above a waterfall on the slope. Hualien city is the base, and beyond it the rift valley runs south between two mountain ranges through rice terraces and Amis indigenous communities — the east coast holds a fraction of the island's population and feels it.
Access caution. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off Hualien in April 2024, killing people inside the park and causing extensive rockfall; large parts of Taroko have been closed for repair since, with reopening staged over years. Check the park's current status before planning around it — this is not a place to arrive and hope.
02How to experience it
Take the train from Taipei down the east coast (a fine ride in itself), base in Hualien, and check which Taroko trails are open before committing a day. Rent a scooter for the rift valley and coast road if you're licensed. Give the east two days minimum; it's the half of Taiwan most itineraries skip.

It's the recommendation people make for getting past Taipei: "for those willing to go a bit further afield than the Taipei area, I can recommend Hualien on the east coast," one wrote, naming Taroko as its main attraction. The standard shortlist from residents runs "Taipei, Sun Moon Lake, Alishan and Taroko Gorge" — the four things a first visit is built around.
