A whole medieval city crammed onto a rock inside a loop of the Tagus, where for a few centuries Muslims, Jews, and Christians built side by side before the Inquisition ended it.
01Why it's worth it
Toledo is the old capital of Castile, and its tangle of lanes still carries the physical evidence of the "three cultures" period: a synagogue built by Muslim craftsmen for a Jewish community, a great cathedral raised over a mosque, Moorish brickwork next to Gothic stone. That coexistence was real and also fragile, and it ended badly with expulsion and Inquisition, which is part of what the city is telling you. It was later the home of El Greco, whose strange, elongated paintings still hang in the churches he made them for, including the enormous Burial of the Count of Orgaz. The city also forged sword steel for centuries, which is why every third shop now sells blades and, less charmingly, heaps of tourist tat. The honest problem is the day-trip crush from nearby Madrid; the fix is simple.
02How to experience it
Sleep here. Toledo is thirty minutes from Madrid, so the streets fill with tour groups midday and empty at night, and the after-dark old town lit gold is when it's yours. See the El Greco paintings in situ rather than only in the museum, and walk the far bank of the Tagus at the Mirador del Valle for the whole city stacked on its rock.
From the locals
Spaniards rate it above the obvious second stop. Advising a first-timer weighing up cities, one wrote: "I would probably recommend spending a day in Toledo and a day in Segovia or Salamanca rather than going to Barcelona." Another sums up why in the city's own nickname — "Toledo might be your place: la ciudad de las tres culturas," the city of three cultures, where Christian, Muslim and Jewish Toledo are all still standing.
