A dizzying mountain road built by a dictator's army across the highest wall of the Carpathians, hairpinning up to a glacial lake near the top and only open for a few snow-free months a year.
01Why it's worth it
The Transfăgărășan was pushed over the Făgăraș mountains in the 1970s on the orders of Nicolae Ceaușescu, partly out of military paranoia after Soviet tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia, and the human cost of building it high and fast was heavy. What it left behind is one of Europe's great drives: a ribbon of switchbacks and tunnels climbing past waterfalls to Bâlea Lake, a glacial tarn just below the ridge, with the Carpathians falling away on both sides. Because it tops out around two thousand metres, it is buried in snow most of the year and only opens in high summer. It became famous partly through a television show that called it a spectacular road, and on a clear day it lives up to it. It is the journey, not a destination, so give it time and stops.
02How to experience it
Drive or cycle it in summer when the pass is open, ideally early to beat the day-trippers and the afternoon cloud. Stop at the waterfalls and walk to Bâlea Lake at the top. Pair it with the fortified towns of Transylvania on the far side.
From the locals
Its fame is specific and earned: "cycling enthusiasts, you must ride what's called the Transfăgărășan," one wrote. "Top Gear called it the greatest road in the world. It's very tough going but sooo worth it." Travellers routinely pair it with Peleș Castle and the Poenari fortress, and note that a rental car is effectively required to do the three together.
