01Why it's worth it
Verona's arena is the third-largest Roman amphitheatre to survive and by far the most alive: rather than a ruin to walk around, it is a working opera house every summer, audiences on the ancient stone steps holding candles as the light goes, Aida with real horses. Italians who have seen both will tell you they prefer it to the Colosseum, and the reason is simple, one is a monument and the other is a night out. The rest of the city earns the UNESCO listing on its own: rosy limestone palaces, the Castelvecchio fortress and its bridge, Piazza delle Erbe's market under frescoed façades, Roman gates, and a hilltop castle looking down on the river bend. The Juliet's balcony business is invented and mobbed, easily skipped. Valpolicella's Amarone vineyards and Lake Garda sit within half an hour.
02How to experience it
Book an arena opera night in summer, cheap stone-step tickets are the authentic seats, and bring a cushion. Otherwise walk the centre, Piazza delle Erbe, Castelvecchio, and up to Castel San Pietro for the rooftop view at sunset. Skip the balcony queue and spend the time on a Valpolicella tasting instead.

Asked to name Italy's finest monument, one Italian broke ranks: "Unpopular opinion, l'arena di Verona mi piace più del colosseo" — I like the Verona arena more than the Colosseum — explaining that after years of going for concerts, "un concerto in un'arena è qualcosa di incredibile." A concert in that arena is something incredible.
