One pine tree on a Hollywood ridgeline survived the fire that took everything around it in 2007, and people hike up to leave their thoughts in a box beneath it.
01Why it's worth it
When the 2007 fire swept the hills at the west end of Griffith Park, it left exactly one tree standing, a lone pine on the bare ridge between Hollywood and Burbank. Someone put an ammo box and a notebook under it, and it grew into a small ritual: hikers climb up, sit on the log, and write something in the journals that fill the box, wishes, grief, bad poetry, love notes, then read what strangers left before them. The tree became the Wisdom Tree. Getting to it is a real climb, a steep and shadeless scramble up the ridge, and from the top you're looking down on the whole city with the Hollywood sign a rugged ridge-walk away to the east if you want to keep going.
02How to experience it
The trail starts at the top of Canyon Drive in Griffith Park, about six hours from the Bay. It's short but genuinely steep and completely exposed, so go in the cool of the morning and bring more water than you think. Add the wisdom you owe to the box, and continue the ridge to the Hollywood sign if your legs are willing.
