01Why it's worth it
Once the stable and grounds of a grand Woodside estate, Wunderlich is now a forested park where trails climb from a historic barn up through oak, madrone, and cool redwood groves toward Skyline. It's less dramatic than the marquee redwood parks and far less crowded, which is exactly the point: a peaceful patch of big trees and dappled trail minutes from the peninsula, still laced with the bridle paths of its horse-country past, so you'll share it with the occasional rider. It's the everyday-good forest hike locals keep to themselves, a solid few-mile loop under the canopy without the drive to Big Sur.
02How to experience it
Start at the Wunderlich parking area on Woodside Road; the loop up to Salamander Flat and back down through the redwoods is the classic. Watch for horses on the trails, go on a weekday for solitude, and after rain for the greenest ferns.
