01Why it's worth it
Manaus sits deep in the Brazilian Amazon, a city of two million reachable mainly by river or air, and it makes the classic base for exploring the world's largest rainforest and the mightiest river system on the planet. Its own oddity is a legacy of the 19th-century rubber boom, when the fortunes made here built a lavish, incongruous European opera house, the Teatro Amazonas, in the middle of the jungle. Just downstream is the famous Meeting of the Waters, where the dark, warm Rio Negro flows alongside the pale, sandy, cooler Solimões for several kilometres, their waters visibly refusing to blend before they finally combine to form the Amazon. From Manaus, river boats and jungle lodges take you into the forest and its channels to spot pink river dolphins, caimans, monkeys, sloths, and countless birds, to fish for piranha, canoe the flooded igapó forest at high water, and visit riverine communities. The Amazon experience is less about big dramatic sightings than immersion in the sheer scale, life, and rhythm of the greatest jungle on Earth.

Use Manaus for the opera house and the Meeting of the Waters, then head into the forest on a multi-day river cruise or jungle-lodge trip for canoeing, wildlife spotting, and river villages; the flooded high-water season lets you paddle through the forest itself. Come prepared for heat and humidity, and choose responsible operators.
