01Why it's worth it
Amboseli is smaller and more focused than the Mara, and its magic is a single, perfect combination: large, relaxed elephant herds, including some of the last of Africa's great big-tusked bulls, moving across open pans and green swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's meltwater, with the mountain itself, the highest in Africa, rising snow-capped on the horizon. When the clouds lift, usually early morning or late afternoon, the sight of elephants framed against Kilimanjaro is one of the most iconic in African wildlife photography. The park's swamps also draw hippos, buffalo, and huge numbers of birds, and its openness makes for excellent, easy viewing. It sits in Maasai land, and community conservancies around it add to the experience. Compact enough to combine with the Mara or the coast on a wider Kenya trip, Amboseli delivers the postcard, elephants and a great mountain, better than anywhere.
02How to experience it
Stay a night or two and be out for the early-morning and late-afternoon light, when Kilimanjaro is most likely to be clear and the elephants are active near the swamps. Combine it with the Maasai Mara on a classic Kenya safari loop. Support the Maasai community conservancies where you can.
