01Why it's worth it
Most travellers pass through Nairobi on the way to the parks, but it rewards a pause. Uniquely, a genuine wildlife-rich national park sits right against the city, so you can watch lions, rhinos, giraffes, and buffalo with skyscrapers on the horizon. Nearby, two much-loved conservation stops let you get close to wildlife with a purpose: the elephant orphanage that rehabilitates rescued calves, and the giraffe centre where endangered Rothschild's giraffes take pellets from your hand. The city also has a lively arts, music, and food scene, and the moving former home of Karen Blixen of "Out of Africa" fame. To the north rises Mount Kenya, an ancient eroded volcano and the highest mountain in the country, its jagged glaciated peaks circled by forest and moorland, offering multi-day treks to rival Kilimanjaro with far fewer people. Together, city, close-up wildlife, and mountain make a strong Kenyan bookend.
02How to experience it
In Nairobi, pair a morning in the national park with the elephant orphanage and giraffe centre, and see the Karen Blixen house if time allows; use normal city safety sense. To the north, trek Mount Kenya (typically a multi-day route to Point Lenana) or simply enjoy the highland lodges and forest around it.
