The largest state park in the country runs on badlands and slot canyons and a wildflower bloom that only shows up some springs, and someone scattered a hundred and thirty giant metal dinosaurs across the desert floor.
01Why it's worth it
Anza-Borrego is 600,000 acres, the biggest state park in the lower 48, spread across the Colorado Desert east of San Diego. Most of the year it's stark: eroded badlands you walk out into at Fonts Point, twisting slot canyons like the Slot with wave-carved sandstone walls, palm oases hidden in the washes. Then, a couple of springs a decade, after a wet enough winter, the desert floor erupts into a superbloom of sand verbena and desert lilies and sunflowers, one of the few deserts on Earth that does it. And scattered around the town of Borrego Springs in the middle of it are the sculptures: more than a hundred and thirty huge rusted-steel figures by the artist Ricardo Breceda, commissioned by a local landowner, prehistoric mammals and dinosaurs and a serpent three hundred and fifty feet long that dives in and out of the sand across a road. You drive from one to the next over open desert, and it never stops being strange.
02How to experience it
The hub is Borrego Springs, about eight hours from the Bay and two from San Diego. The sculptures at Galleta Meadows are free and scattered on open land, best found by car with a map. The Slot and Fonts Point are the classic short hikes. Check bloom reports before a spring trip, because the superbloom is all or nothing, and go in the cool months; summer heat out here kills.
