A flat coral island off the top of Cebu with a stretch of white sand Filipinos say could rival Boracay's — and which they keep recommending precisely because almost nobody has gone there instead.
01Why it's worth it
Bantayan is low, dry and small enough to circle on a scooter in a couple of hours. The sand on the Santa Fe side is the fine white kind that made Boracay famous, the water shelves out very gradually, and the whole island sits outside the typhoon belt's worst track — which is why it has been a quiet fishing and egg-producing island for centuries rather than a resort strip.
The three towns — Santa Fe, Bantayan and Madridejos — are ordinary working places. Santa Fe has most of the accommodation; the island's centre is farmland and nipa huts; Ogtong Cave has a small freshwater pool you can swim in; and the sixteenth-century Saints Peter and Paul church in Bantayan town is one of the oldest in the Visayas. Virgin Island and Hilantagaan are the standard boat trips.
What people describe, consistently, is the absence of pressure: no hawkers to speak of, no party strip, and the specific relief of a beach where you are not competing for the photogenic spot.
02How to experience it
Bus from Cebu City's north terminal to Hagnaya, then the ferry to Santa Fe. Rent a scooter or a bicycle. Stay several days and do very little — this is not an itinerary island. Go in the lean season if you can; go anywhere else during Holy Week, when the whole of Cebu arrives at once.
The honest note
Getting there is genuinely tiring, and everyone who recommends it says so in the same breath. From Manila it is a flight, a four-hour bus and a ferry. One returning visitor put it plainly: "The trip going to the island is a little tiring (from Manila), but so worth it."
Holy Week is the exception to everything on this page. The island fills, prices trebles, and accommodation books out months ahead.
It is being discovered, and the people recommending it are aware of the contradiction — the same threads that name it are threads asking what the "next Boracay" is.
One unusually good thing, worth knowing. In a Philippine thread about a foreign visitor being charged ₱16,000 for a meal, Bantayan came up as the model to copy rather than a place to avoid: "LGUs should follow the example of Bantayan Island and some municipalities in Southern Cebu. All activities (trekking, island hopping, etc) need to be booked via the tourism office na para standardized yung prices." Regulated, published pricing through the tourism office is rare in Philippine beach destinations and is a real argument for going here over somewhere better known.
From the locals
The comparison Filipinos reach for is always the same one. Asked which place exceeded their expectations: "Bantayan — the long stretch of white sand could rival that of Bora but without the crowd. Dito ko talaga na experience yung forget about everything back home like work, turn off my phone and laptop because the place is just pretty."
Asked what the next Boracay is, the answer was practical rather than romantic: "if you're looking for a quiet beach na white sand, I'd say Bantayan Island, Cebu. Not as commercialized as Boracay, good cell signal (if you wanna work from there), ample food options, friendly locals, easy to get around since the island is small."
Asked the best question of all — the one place in the country you would go back to again and again — someone answered with the receipts attached: "Bantayan, Cebu. Sobrang ganda ng beach, not too crowded, very chill vibe. Maraming food choices… Been there twice, planning to go again soon."
And in a Tagalog thread asking for hidden gems that are not too crowded, the sharpest version of the case: "Bantayan Island — mapapatanong ka nalang ng bat nila to hindi pinupuntahan at nagsisiksikan sa Boracay" — it will just leave you wondering why people don't come here, and cram into Boracay instead.
