01Why it's worth it
Away from the all-inclusive resorts, Jamaica's soul lies in its mountains and its capital. The Blue Mountains, a range of cool, forested peaks in the east, are famous for Blue Mountain coffee, among the most sought-after and expensive in the world, grown on their misty slopes; you can tour the estates, hike through forest and coffee farms, and, for the ambitious, make the classic pre-dawn trek to the summit of Blue Mountain Peak to watch the sun rise over the island and, on a clear day, all the way to Cuba. At the mountains' feet sprawls Kingston, the raw, energetic heart of Jamaican culture: not a beach town but the birthplace of reggae, ska, and dancehall, home to the Bob Marley Museum in the reggae legend's old house, the Trench Town neighbourhood where the music was born, and a thriving arts, food, and music scene, along with the historical sites of Port Royal, the sunken pirate city, across the harbour. Together, the cool coffee mountains and the pulsing capital reveal a deeper, more authentic Jamaica than the resort strip, one of music, mountains, and genuine culture.
02How to experience it
Tour a Blue Mountain coffee estate and hike the forested trails, with the pre-dawn Blue Mountain Peak trek for the sunrise if you're fit. In Kingston, visit the Bob Marley Museum and the music and food scene, and take a boat to the sunken pirate city of Port Royal. Go in the drier months, and pair it with the beaches for balance.
