01Why it's worth it
The Citadelle Laferrière is one of the most powerful monuments in the Americas, both as architecture and as symbol. After the enslaved people of Haiti rose up and defeated Napoleon's forces to win independence in 1804, the first and only nation ever created by a successful slave revolt, the new leaders, fearing a French return, built this immense fortress atop a 900-metre mountain in the north: a mountain of masonry with walls up to four metres thick, bristling with hundreds of cannon, capable of garrisoning thousands, a staggering feat of engineering and human will erected as a guarantee of hard-won freedom. Reached by a climb (or on horseback) up the mountain, with the ruined palace of Sans-Souci at its foot, it commands vast views and stands as a monument to liberty and to the pride and suffering of the Haitian people, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tragically, Haiti today is gripped by profound crisis, gang violence, political collapse, and humanitarian catastrophe, and travel there is strongly advised against. This entry honours an extraordinary and meaningful place, offered as context and in hope of a better future for Haiti, not as a current travel recommendation.
