A grand imperial capital split by the Danube into hilly Buda and flat Pest, sitting on hot springs that feed sprawling thermal bath palaces where the city goes to soak and play chess in the steam.
01Why it's worth it
Budapest was the eastern half of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and it kept the scale: a monumental riverfront of the neo-Gothic Parliament, chain bridges, and the castle hill of old Buda facing the boulevards of Pest across the water. Its particular signature is water. The city sits on a field of thermal springs, and it turned them into great public bathhouses, from the yellow Széchenyi baths where locals soak outdoors in winter steam to the Ottoman-era domed baths left from Turkish rule. On top of that runs a younger, scruffier culture of ruin bars, sprawling drinking dens improvised in abandoned buildings and courtyards. Handsome, a little faded, and cheaper than Western Europe, it rewards several days.
02How to experience it
Soak at a couple of contrasting baths, the big outdoor Széchenyi and a small Ottoman one, and go into the ruin bars of the old Jewish quarter at night. Walk both riverbanks for the Parliament and castle views, and take the funicular or the walk up Buda's hill.

A Hungarian-American who visits several times a year gives the standing advice: "Budapest — most people just go here, and it's a wonderful and cheap city. Get tickets to go inside the Parliament." The food is treated as non-negotiable: "you should eat all the amazing Hungarian food. The most famous are paprikás chicken and gulyás — for us it's a soup, not a stew — but an important runner-up you shouldn't ignore is stuffed cabbage."
