The hook
The largest lake in Central Europe, so central to a landlocked country that Hungarians call it their sea, warm and shallow enough to wade far out, ringed by vineyards and an old abbey on a volcanic tongue of land.
01Why it's worth it
Balaton is where Hungary goes to the beach. It is a long, shallow lake, warm in summer and famously wadeable, and the whole country decamps to its shores in the heat: the lively south side for resorts and parties, the quieter north for wine and hills. The Tihany peninsula juts into it, crowned by a Baroque abbey and shaped by old volcanic activity that also gives the north shore its mineral-rich soils and a string of small wineries. Off-season it empties out and turns reflective and cheap. It is not dramatic scenery, but as a relaxed lake summer with good wine attached, it is the Hungarian classic.
02How to experience it
Base on the north shore for the wine villages, Tihany abbey, and calmer swimming, or the south for the resort scene. Taste the volcanic-soil whites of Badacsony, and cycle part of the lakeside path. Summer for the buzz, autumn for the harvest and quiet.
